Reflection on ICT as Communicative Tools
In today's classrooms, every student is different. There are students who have disabilities that do not enable them to speak, hear, or write. As teachers, it is our mandate to help everyone participate in learning. That is why ICT communication tools are extremely vital in inclusive learning.
Communication tools are technologies that help people communicate their ideas and emotions. In an inclusive classroom, a student who cannot speak well may employ a Text-to-Speech (TTS) program, which voices what they are typing. A second student who cannot write can employ a Speech-to-Text program in order to speak and have their words transcribed to writing. For example, a child with autism can employ an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) program with symbols and images so that they can speak and communicate what they need to convey. These tools must be used on a daily basis, not as an exception. For instance, when working in groups, a student can use a communication board or an application to communicate. Teachers can prepare lessons where students read aloud from books using TTS applications. If a student uses a messaging application to ask questions during a lesson, it must be accepted as usual so that they become comfortable.
Some of the most frequently used assistive tools are:
* TTS software for students with reading disabilities,
* Speech-to-Text software for students with writing disabilities,
* Email for shy or hard-of-hearing students, and
* Zoom or Google Meet for synchronous classes where students can engage in discussions.
There are two types of communication. First Synchronous communication, e.g., live video conversations, makes students feel engaged from the very start. Asynchronous communication, e.g., e-mail or recorded videos, gives students more time to understand and respond. For example, a student with a learning disability can take time writing down his/her ideas prior to speaking.
There may be problems from time to time like not having the internet or not being able to utilize the tools. Schools can help by training and finding free apps. These are helpful in making the students confident and belonging.p
Generally, ICT communication tools are very crucial for inclusive classrooms. They give all the students a voice and allow them to learn better. Teachers can make sure all the students feel heard and valued by being compassionate and preparing well.
