Reflection on ICT as Informative Tool
In today's digital age, ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has a revolutionary role to play in the teaching-learning process. Among its many applications, ICT as a tool for information significantly enables the teacher and learner alike to access the right content, enhancing the learner's participation and making learning more learner-cantered. Using websites, learning platforms, digital libraries, and online tutorials, information is rendered more accessible, current, and diverse in form.
During my study of ICT as a learning tool, I used websites such as Khan Academy, YouTube, and National Geographic Kids to supplement classroom instruction. These websites provided visual and auditory experiences that complemented students' learning. For example, when learning about the solar system, a 3D virtual tour of the planets on NASA's official website captivated the students far more than pictures in textbooks. The availability of multimedia and interactive content added richness and readability to abstract concepts, especially for visual and auditory learners.
I learned that ICT tools also supported independent learning because students could revisit and study content at their own pace and explore further. However, there were issues, primarily in verifying the accuracy of the information. It also taught me the importance of educating students on how to critically evaluate online sources. Some of the students were also hindered by too much information or advertisements and irrelevant content on some websites.
I enjoyed that introducing ICT requires proper planning. All the materials in the online space are not tailored to curriculum aims, and you have to pick content that's age-appropriate, pertinent, and engaging. Besides, technology availability can be unbalanced, and you have to make sure digital learning environments are inclusive.
To wrap up, leveraging ICT as a tool for information makes learners curious, facilitates differentiated learning, and closes the space between textbook reading and actual real-world understanding. It enhances life-long learning abilities like digital literacy, research, and independent learning. As an educator, it is my mandate to utilize such tools judiciously so they act as a bridge, and not a bottleneck, to good learning experiences.
